It's unfortunate, then, that this functionality doesn't extend to Windows 10, which doesn't allow for anywhere near as much configuration and system integration.

Being able to control the TV volume with your Xbox controller is something I never thought I needed until now. Now, you can also add system-level features to the reverse paddles, including things like Xbox capture and screenshots, and even TV controls if you've set up the IR Blaster on your Xbox One. The upgraded microprocessor in the Elite S2 allows for a greater degree of keybindings than the previous Elite as well. Using a longer joystick, for example, gives you a greater distance away from the joystick pivot for making small precise aiming adjustments without having to sacrifice speed.īeing able to control the TV volume with your Xbox controller is something I never thought I needed until now. There's also a tension control key, which lets you increase the amount of force you have to deliver to move a thumbstick, which can be a massive boost for precision with the right tweaks. Squeezing them in with an usual degree of force didn't cause any damage, nor did dropping the controller on the floor shoulder-button first (although, again, I don't recommend attempting either at home).īeyond the charging dock, a lot of the Series 2's new features are hidden away on the inside or in subtle additions throughout. They feel far stronger than the previous effort. If you're a neat freak, it may drive you crazy.Īnother area of concern for many has been the shoulder buttons, which suffered from similar wear and tear problems on the previous Elite. In fact, the controller is generally difficult to keep clean, with various tiny notches and grooves that are prone to dust accumulation. The materials in general just feel great to the touch, even if the soft matte black plastic attracts fingerprints and smudges like mad. The fact the grips wrap around the whole handles instead of just on the back gives it a more pleasant feel in hand. I'm incredibly confident in what Microsoft has put together here. Without a time machine, there's no way to know if they won't warp over time, but the difference in quality between the original Elite and the S2 is readily apparent. The stuff the original Elite got right has been refined, and the stuff it got wrong has been fixed. I was unable to lever it off using a guitar pick or even a blunt razor (but still, it's not something I recommend you try at home!) Rather than a simple shape mold, the new rubber grips are fixed with a new chemical bonding process, and it shows. Considering you can get an entire games console, the Nintendo Switch Lite for just a little more, you really have to be serious about your gaming to consider one.Beyond charging, most of the controller's improvements are refinements to existing features we had on the previous S2, with what feels like a much tighter, denser construction. While the original was pricey - already a considerable investment for gamers - the newer model is even more expensive. Of course, the other hefty feature of the Elite 2 is its price, which might put some off. It's a shame you can't change the weight through additional ballast, as with some other premium controllers on the market, but it does feel solid and comfortable - like a precision tool should. It is heavy, but not so much that you will tire. It gives a more robust, heavier feel to Xbox gaming.
Hefty feel and priceĪs we've already said, we already use the original Elite controller so know how the heft works in the hand. However, bar the colour and slogan, it is identical to the faceted D-pad you do get anyway, so is a purely cosmetic addition. All green it came with "Gamescom 2019" emblazoned on it and, as far as we could tell, won't be available to purchase.
We also saw an extra circular D-pad during Gamescom that, sadly, won't be included. Naturally, just like the first Elite, Series 2 comes with several interchangeable accessories: six thumbsticks in total, four paddles and two D-pads.
